About Us
Mission
Providing free, quality one-to-one tutoring for adults reading at or below the sixth grade level seeking to transform their lives through enhanced literacy.
About us
Rio Arriba Adult Literacy Program (RAALP) began operation in 2012. The organization was founded by members of the Española Valley who are dedicated to improving reading skills for adults in an effort to break the cycle of illiteracy in our community.
Our volunteer tutors are certified through free training provided by the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy. Tutors are then matched with an adult student. The team maps out specific short- and long-term goals set by the student. Together they implement a plan to meet these literacy goals which might include filling out a job application, understanding prescription labels, reading to children or grandchildren or any other reading-related purpose.
Tutor/student teams meet two hours weekly for a minimum of six months at mutually agreed-upon public locations.
RAALP maintains a resource library for tutor/student team use, and conducts periodic in-service workshops.
